Wishing you all a very Happy ‘Diwali’ and prosperous New Year!

As stated last month Marker events under ‘Slum Intervention Project’ continued this month during Ganpati festival to spread message for awareness and prevention of HIV /AIDS. 

Awareness stalls, street plays, poster exhibitions, distribution of IEC materials, etc. were continued during festival.  Anirudha Group of Mumbai, arranged by MDACS, performed street plays.

SLUM  SANITATION

Slum sanitation programme started jointly with World Bank & Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai with help of World Bank has floated a Sanitation Scheme for mainly in slum areas to construct common and individual toilets.  This will help to keep the slum area clean and free from epidemic.

In this scheme Yuvak Pratishthan is working as NGO and has appointed trained social workers in this scheme.  Social workers with the help of Municipal Corporator, Local Social Leaders conducts a meeting of slum dwellers and explains them the scheme and advantage of scheme to their locality and family.

This month with help of locality social workers, we have conducted meetings in Konkan Nagar, Khindipada, Tembipada in Bhandup (W), Tagore Nagar, Parksite, Indira Nagar, Surya Nagar in Vikhroli and Kamraj Nagar, Ramabai Nagar at Ghatkopar.  40 to 60 residents of the area participated in the meeting and approx. 2000 handouts were distributed in the locality.

In addition to above work we have given advertisement through Cable Television in local area.  There was a good response to advertisement.  About 5 to 6 telephone calls we used to receive for finding out further details.

So far we could succeeded in getting approval and 5 Work Orders for construction of common toilets in Bhandup (W) area and another two localities from Ghatkopar area are on the way to get approval.  We are in confident to get some more approvals in short time and help the slum dwellers to give standard living facility.

Valmiki Ambedker Malin Basti Awas Yojana (VAMBAY):

Another scheme has been started under VAMBAY for which we have approached MHADA and got approval to construct houses for the people living under BPL.

This is basically Central govt. sponsored scheme. Yuvak Pratishthan acted, appointed as NGO.  The main objective is to provide shelter or upgrade the existing shelter for BPL in urban slums.  VAMBAY is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme shared on a 50:50 basis.  They are provided with basic amenities for each dwelling unit – one room, a bath, a kitchen and flooring with tiles. MHADA is the implementing agency in Mumbai.

10 houses of Ghatkopar area have been completed this month covering Sainath Nagar Road , Barve Chowk, Indira Nagar, Laxmi Baug, Golibar Road .

GTB   HOSPITAL

We have started motivating and empowering the patients of GTB Hospital , Sewri, with some new techniques such as Music Therapy, Yoga, Diet and Nutrition, Biogas Plant and Vocational Training for Rehabilitation of TB patients.

13 Television sets & MP3 player with music network installed in this month, for the patient’s music therapy in each ward.  Yoga class for the patients started.  15-20 patients, which includes both male & female have been attending and taking benefits of yoga every Monday. 

Proposal for Biogas Plant submitted to Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.  We are waiting for approval.

Yuvak Pratishthan’s Samarpan Arogya Kendra:

In the month of August, a total of 897 patients, which includes 289 new and 608 old, visited the centre and benefited through allopathic and homeopathic medication. 

In all, 21 Asthama, 7 Diabetes, 3 suspected Tuberculosis, 38 Chronic Arthritis and 7 Cardiac cases found.  Asthama and Chronic Arthritis cases referred for homeopathy treatment, Diabetes referred to Helpage India for further treatment and care. 

Regular Mobile General Check –up camps continues.  9 camps held this month in Mulund area.  263 patients visited the camp which includes 162 new and 94 old patients were performed complete health check-up at nominal charge of Rs.10 for Registration and Rs.5 for medicine. We request the citizen of Mulund, Bhandup and all nearby areas to visit the centre and take benefits of all the medication / health related problems from our centre.

PALAVI – (‘S’ Ward)

4589 families have been visited in the month which includes 7065 male, 6969 female get benefited through one to one counselling.  109 ANC cases found.  20 have been referred to our centres at Savitribai Maternity Home & Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital .  8 male, 12 female agreed for voluntary testing.  They have been referred to VCTC. 1 found HIV+ve, she has been referred to Govt. Hospital .  10 Tuberculosis patients (8 male & 2 female) were sent to DOT centre for further treatment and care. 100 cases of Diabetes found and referred for further treatment.

2 Pregnant ladies found HIV +ve.  Proper counselling & follow-up visits paid regularly for Naveropin dose, breast feeding etc.

PALAVI  – (‘E’ Ward)

This month in ‘E’ Ward area, our Out Reach Workers had direct interactions with 4416 families, which includes 4742 male and 5559 female.  They were counselled, guided and given proper guidance on health related matters, HIV & PPTCT Centre, Prevention and Family Planning.

In all, No cases found of opportunistic infections.  116 ANC patients found, out of which 6 have been referred to Nair Hospital PPTCT Centre.  1 case found suffering from Tuberculosis.  6 cases of Candidacies have been referred to STD Centres. 726 persons of other cases like Diabetes i.e. 185, BP 541 etc. were found. 

We would like to mention here that we have covered 1,41,742 population of this ward in 6 months from Jan to Sept, under which 30 ANC cases are found +ve in this ward.

Jeevan Akshay(Seva Mobile) :

In the month of August, 4 camps were held at 2 centres at Kamraj Nagar and Ramabai Nagar.  264 beneficiaries checked, guided and provided medicines. 

154 at Kamraj Nagar, which includes 20 male, 65 female and 68 children performed complete check-up.  110 at Ramabai Nagar, covering 11 male, 55 female, 44 children benefited. 

No cases of Tuberculosis or other disease registered.  Only general cases like fever, blood pressure etc. were distributed medicines.

Jeevan Aasha

In the month of September, 118 patients have visited our office and inquired about Jeevan Aasha.  78 patients have received financial assistance this month from different Trusts.  Others are under process.  The following chart is showing the category of the patients / cases:

Apart from this, we have received more than 400 phone calls for enquiry / assistance during the month.

5 Patients screened for CT-Scan & 6 MRI cases forwarded to private institutions to be done at very concessional rates i.e. upto 65% & 55% discount respectively in their charges.

We are receiving regular appreciation and gratitude from the patients.

Slum Intervention Project

All the regular activities, like BCC Event, One to One, One to Group Sessions, Condom Promotion & Distribution, Tertiary Visit, Secondary Visit, Video Shows, Lectures, Posters Exhibitions, Establishment of Condom Outlets, Treatment and Followup of STD patients, have been done.

The marker event organised under this project has been described in beginning of this newsletter.
